Cupping massage (Chinese cupping incorporated in a massage treatment) is a modified version of the common practise of cupping used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The results of this simple treatment produces are impressive.
A negative pressure and suction is created and the tissue can be lifted up and be moved as opposed to normal massage where the tissue is compressed down. Apart from the stretch and pull of tissue, the suction will have a great benefit to circulation and movement of fluid and blood, especially within the skin, which can be noticed as a temporary redness or feeling of heat.
I use cupping massage together with deep tissue and/or holistic massage to focus on deep muscles and surrounding fascia or connective tissue to break down adhesions or deep scar tissue, stretch tissue and improve circulation of fluid.
Massage cupping is also effective in treating cellulite. A light suction provides drainage, while heavier application can be used to stimulate circulation and loosen adhesions or “dimpling.”
Cupping causes the skin to temporarily turn red, blue or purple, especially if there is an injury or energetic blockage under the area that was cupped. The skin discoloration can last anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks, but is rarely painful. Once the marks have cleared, the procedure can be repeated until the condition or ailment is resolved.
